Becoming by Michelle Obama Audiobook Review
There are political memoirs, and there is Becoming. Michelle Obama's 2018 memoir sold more copies than any other in American publishing history, and the audiobook narrated by Obama herself is in a different category from the typical celebrity audio release.
Why Audio Is the Superior Format
Obama narrates all 19 hours herself, and the difference between reading and hearing this book is significant. The chapter on her father's deteriorating health from multiple sclerosis becomes something close to unbearable when heard in her voice. Her discussion of miscarriage and IVF carries weight that text alone cannot convey.
Her performance is not theatrical. She delivers emotional moments with the controlled stillness of someone who has decided exactly what to share and how. That restraint is more affecting than melodrama would be.
The Structure
Becoming divides into three sections: Becoming Me (childhood and early life), Becoming Us (her marriage and Barack's early political career), and Becoming More (the White House years and aftermath).
The childhood section is the strongest. Obama writes about growing up on the South Side of Chicago with specificity that makes the environment completely real — the layout of her parents' apartment, the neighbors, the texture of aspiration in a working-class Black family.
What the Book Does Not Cover
Becoming is not a political tell-all. Obama largely avoids overt policy commentary and does not relitigate controversies from the Obama administration. Readers hoping for score-settling will be disappointed. This restraint makes the book durable.
Runtime and Format
19 hours at 1.0x speed. Best at 1.0-1.25x to preserve the vocal performance. Available on Audible, Scribd, and via Libby.
Verdict
4.7 out of 5. One of the best political memoirs ever written and one of the best audiobook narrations in the genre. Essential listening.
